On the merge field, you can click on an item and then click on the blue info button
in the lower left corner of the field to see the merge chain of that item up to the highest level of the item.
In the same box, you can see the Generator that produces that item.
Note that in this box you will not be able to see what the higher levels of the selected item look like if you have never gotten them on the field before.
