A red engineering kit is automatically added to your storage. You can find it in tab 3. 

You can use the red engineering kit to restore special buildings: Water Tower, Ice, Coal, and Iron Units, and the main prize of the Pearl Mazes event.

An engineering kit can't be opened or taken to the Home Station. It's applied automatically when fixing the special buildings.
