You can hide big obstacles by using the X-Ray mode. Just tap the yellow icon with an arrow:

Then tap the Tree icon to activate the X-ray mode:

The biggest obstacles will be hidden, and you'll see the item you're looking for. This mode is also good for placing your buildings in the most efficient way.

To return to the normal view, tap the Tree icon one more time.
